Taekwondo is one of the oldest forms of martial arts. For over 2,000 years the practice has helped people all around the world to develop key life skills – including resilience, confidence and physical and mental fitness.

Children gain the strongest benefit from Taekwondo training. Taekwondo practice helps children to navigate the social and academic challenges that face them in their developing years. The influence of this training helps to shape young minds and bodies into capable adults as they mature and grow.

Taekwondo is a great family activity, where parents and children train together and learn new abilities. Throughout practice, children learn how to set goals and achieve them, and how to back up and try again when they fall. Overcoming setbacks and demonstrating care for their fellow students helps children to build leadership qualities through focus, discipline, and mindfulness.

The confidence children gain in Taekwondo comes from students competing against themselves – not others. Taekwondo is about self-development and improvement, the individual pursuit of growth instead of team competitiveness.

Through repetition, students become stronger – both physically and mentally. Each session gives students a chance to grow in their knowledge of physical movement, building strength, flexibility and stamina as they gradually master different Taekwondo techniques. Children learn what they are capable of through disciplined practice, finding great respect and appreciation for what their body can achieve.

Perseverance is rewarded by progressing in rank (coloured belts and stripes) and responsibilities (senior students assist instructors with running classes). This cannot happen without great dedication to the work. Ranks are physical representations of achievement, and it instils great pride in children for what they can accomplish through their hard work.

It’s not just ranks and belts that help children to improve confidence. Taekwondo teaches honour through commitment, respect and trust. By instilling these qualities into their training, each student builds self-esteem from a strong foundation of discipline and action, based on their character – not just pure strength.

Confidence also develops from building healthy mental health practices during training. Many students are attracted to martial arts after being bullied, or experiencing difficult life events. They might feel hopeless or weak, struggling to find a sense of control. Taekwondo teaches students to remain calm and strong in difficult circumstances or situations, finding balance between their emotions and their actions.

The community within Taekwondo is a wonderful place for children to develop social skills among peers and older students. The camaraderie and friendship found in class helps children to feel a sense of belonging that is both encouraging and safe. Regardless of skills or rank, Taekwondo helps children to feel supported and confident in their pursuits as every student is respectful and helpful towards each other.

At UMA, children can start learning taekwondo from 3 to 6 years old. For further questions on martial arts or sign up for a free trial class, contact us!
